What is LASIK?

LASIK, or Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, is a popular refractive eye procedure that corrects vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Many people choose LASIK to reduce their dependence on glasses and/or contact lenses.

After LASIK, you will be able to enjoy the freedom and convenience of clear vision without the hassle of corrective visual aids. LASIK is a safe and effective procedure that offers candidates greater visual freedom.

Who is a

Good Candidate for LASIK?

If you're considering LASIK, the first step is to schedule a consultation with your eye doctor at Carolina Cataract & Laser Center in Charleston, South Carolina. During this visit, your doctor will examine your eyes closely and ask about your lifestyle and vision needs.

This process will help them to determine if LASIK is the best vision correction procedure for you. You may be a good candidate for LASIK if you:

  • Are at least 18 years old.
  • Have had stable vision for 1-2 years.
  • Are not pregnant or nursing.
  • Have thick enough corneas.
  • Are in good overall health.
  • Do not have any pre-existing eye conditions.
  • Have realistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure.

If you are wondering if you are a good candidate for LASIK, the best way to find out is by scheduling a consultation with your eye doctor at Carolina Cataract & Laser Center.

What to Expect During the LASIK Procedure

The LASIK procedure is quick, typically taking less than thirty minutes for both eyes. Before the procedure, your eye doctor will instill numbing drops to ensure you are completely comfortable.

During the procedure, you will be positioned comfortably under the laser. Your eye doctor will place a tiny device called an eyelid speculum on your eyelids that will be used to keep your eye open, so you don't have to worry about blinking.

Your surgeon will create a corneal flap on the front surface of your eye.  This flap is folded back to expose the area of the eye to be reshaped by the laser.

Next, the surgeon will use the laser to reshape this inner portion of the cornea to your precise measurements. After reshaping your cornea, your LASIK surgeon will reposition the corneal flap where it will remain and heal.

You will return to the waiting area for about twenty minutes following the procedure to allow the flap to settle before a final check is performed by your LASIK surgeon. Since LASIK is an outpatient procedure, you will return to the comfort of your home on the same day.

What is the

Recovery Process Like After LASIK?

After the LASIK procedure, many people notice immediate improvement in their vision. However, for some people, it can take a couple of weeks to witness the full potential of their vision once their eyes heal.

In most cases, you will be able to return to many of your normal daily activities within a few days after the procedure. However, it's essential to follow your LASIK surgeon's post-operative instructions carefully. These instructions may include:

  • Using prescription eye drops
  • Avoiding rubbing your eyes
  • Wearing protective shields while sleeping.

As your eyes heal, you may notice fluctuations in your vision, but this is normal and should stabilize within a few weeks. Regular follow-up appointments with your eye doctor will help us to monitor your progress and ensure a smooth recovery process.
