Joseph M. Lally, Jr., M.D. is a fellowship-trained Board Certified ophthalmic surgeon, specializing in cataract surgery.
Dr. Lally graduated from Dartmouth College and received his MS degree from Georgetown University. After medical school and residency at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, he completed his fellowship in Cataract and Cornea Surgery at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, working with the ophthalmic surgeons who developed phacoemulsification cataract surgery and the excimer laser.
For over three decades, he has been devoted to serving the eye care needs of the South Carolina Lowcountry in his Charleston and Walterboro offices as well as through his academic position as Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the Medical University of South Carolina. He has been annually awarded “Top Doctor” designation by Castle Connolly.
He has been recognized as a well-respected leader in the field on a local, national, and international level. He is Ophthalmology Division Chief at Roper Hospital and Board President of the Roper St. Francis Surgery Center. He has served as President of the Charleston Ophthalmological Society as well as the South Carolina Society of Ophthalmology. He has also served on the Council of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, where he has received an AAO Special Recognition Award. He has lectured and volunteered to perform cataract surgery worldwide, most notably in Belize and on Project Orbis, having received a commendation from the people of Lithuania for his efforts on behalf of their country’s eye care.
Dr. Lally remains actively engaged in training the next generation of ophthalmologists at MUSC’s Storm Eye Institute, where he has been the recipient of numerous honors including the Pierre Gautier Jenkins Teaching Award.
